Upper & Lower Geyser Basin Maps; F.V. Hayden Expedition (1871)
These detailed maps of the Upper & Lower Geyser Basins were produced following the 1871 Geological Survey exploring northwestern Wyoming, led by geologist Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden. The maps also reference a reconnaissance made by Gustavus R. Bechler, the chief topographer of the Hayden Survey’s Snake River Division.
By the mid 1800s, reports of Yellowstone country’s thermal features and other natural wonders had reached across the nation, which eagerly turned its attention Westward following the Civil War. The Hayden expedition, which included photographer William Henry Jackson and painter Thomas Moran, was the first federally funded geological survey to explore and document the region. The detailed descriptions, maps, paintings, and photographs which produced as a result of the expedition would later encourage Congress to designate Yellowstone as the world’s first National Park.
